Jeep Cherokee Hub Replacement
How to Replace a Jeep Cherokee Hub
The bearings in the front wheels of my 1999 Cherokee are an unserviceable part that is contained in a hub. You can't take it apart to replace the bearings inside so if you are having any trouble with it you must replace the whole thing. Unfortunately, this part is a bit pricey. I found a replacement Jeep Cherokee hub for about 100 bucks but you can pay upwards of 200 bucks for one of these hubs.
The good news is that they are easy to replace. The toughest part is removing the Cherokee hub nut, but even that can be removed with a little innovativeness.
Here is a quick write-up for replacing the front wheel hub on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport:
Lift and remove the front wheel that you will be replacing the hub.
REMOVE THE BRAKE CALIPER
There are 2 bolts that hold on the brake caliper.
Remove these bolts and slide off the brake caliper. The disc brake will also slide off at this point.
HANG THE BRAKE CALIPER
It is a good idea to use some wire to hang the brake
caliper from so you don't damage it.
REMOVE THE JEEP CHEROKEE AXLE NUT
The nut is 36 mm. You will need a long breaker or a pipe to get leverage on the bolt.
To keep the hub from turning I used a pipe wrench to hold the axle in place.
Here are some other tips: HOW TO REMOVE THE AXLE NUT
Remove the 3 bolts on the back side of the hub using a 13mm 12-point socket.
Now all you need to do is put the new hub back in and tighten some bolts.
NOTE: It is a good idea to put some anti seize around the Jeep Cherokee hub that contacts the knuckle to keep it from getting stuck for the next time you need to remove the hub.
REASSEMBLY: Basically the reverse of what is above. Make sure you tighten the axle nutt to 175 ft/lbs to ensure the life of your new hub bearing.
